Open to all! In Honor of #MedComms Day: AP ISMPP U- A Publication Rhapsody- An Encore from the 2025 Annual Meeting
Tuesday June 24, 2025 9:00pm - 10:00pm EDT
Join ISMPP in celebrating #MedComms Day with this complimentary 60-minute, open-to-all webinar!

Strides have been made in making transparency in reporting and compliance within medical publications more globally accessible. Examples include considering how novel approaches can be applied in documenting written feedback and navigating beyond a presumptive willingness for authors to openly disagree with their peers. However, the current global publication landscape, which continues to function predominantly in English via both peer-reviewed journals and international congresses, remains inequitably weighted in favor of native English-speakers.

Developments in artificial intelligence (AI) provide opportunities to address some of this inequity. AI translations hold the promise of improving publication equity by reducing barriers for non-native English speakers to publishing their research in English, but many questions remain: Will translation and English-language editing assistance reduce language-related barriers to publication? Can cultural and verbal nuance be accurately captured when using AI and how will this impact manuscript drafting and review? How can AI assistants be utilized to better capture author input for compliance purposes? Are there unforeseen challenges when non-native English speakers use AI that is largely trained on English-language datasets, or on comparatively limited datasets from languages other than English, to improve their manuscripts?

We want to challenge the audience and the larger publications community to redefine their current understanding of diversity, equity, and inclusion, and commit to applying AI across the medical publications industry in a manner that embraces our global diversity in language and communication and cultural norms.

Learning Objectives: At the end of this session attendees will
  • To evaluate the current publication landscape and the inequity that our publication processes/guidelines may unconsciously reinforce
  • To analyze how advancements in AI large language models and translations for publications have potential to address some of this inequity
  • To create a call to action for all attendees and ISMPP to consider how they can broaden their understanding of DE&I in the publication world and better include non-native English-speaking stakeholders
